Clinical Training at Trilogy

Trilogy’s Psychological Services Department offers clinical practica in psychotherapy and psychological assessment. Each training year, Trilogy accepts approximately 6 therapy practicum students who are candidates for a masters or doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling, and 2 Assessment Practicum students who are doctoral candidates in Clinical Psychology.

Trilogy’s other departments also offer Training opportunities to pre-practicum students and social work students as well.

Our Mission
Trilogy, Inc. is a comprehensive community mental health center which serves adults with severe and persistent mental illness. We strive to offer the highest quality service possible to the residents of our community. Our clients come from a diverse range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and represent a wide range of human diversity in general. Our goal is to tailor our services to meet the individual needs of our clients and to empower them to reach their fullest potential. To that end, we offer comprehensive services, including case management, residential programs, vocational rehabilitation, psychosocial rehabilitation, psychiatric services, crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapies, and psychological testing. Trilogy, Inc. is committed to providing services to clients regardless of their ability to pay, and our practicum plays a key role in our ability to offer psychological services to clients who could not afford them otherwise.

Training Values

We are dedicated to training future clinicians in a diverse, stimulating, and supportive environment. Students are exposed to a wide array of techniques and interventions within the context of our multidisciplinary team approach to treatment. Helping our clients requires a comprehensive understanding of human behavior and, as a result, we tailor our services around treatments in both psychodynamic/relational therapies as well as the more structured interventions of dialectical behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral therapies. We also respect our students and help them discover their own therapeutic styles while providing support and guidance. It is our goal to help students develop both sound clinical skills and solid professional values. Training students is a joy for us, and we feel it enriches our overall agency environment.

Psychological Services Meetings

INDIVIDUAL SUPERVISION
Students schedule a regular weekly meeting time with their primary supervisor at the start of the practicum. Individual supervision is a primary aspect of the practicum experience and is intended to support and guide students through all facets of their training experience. A central focus of supervision is the students’ individual psychotherapy work and the various interactions and clinical dilemmas that arise. Students are encouraged to discuss their reactions in detail and understand how their experience relates to the clients organization and engagement in interpersonal situations including the therapy relationship. Students are expected to audio tape therapy sessions to facilitate the supervision process. Supervision is also a place for students to discuss professional development, and issues or concerns regarding Trilogy and their training experience.

GROUP SUPERVISION
All the therapy externs meet in group supervision each week to present cases, discuss various clinical dilemmas, give and receive peer feedback, and address other issues related to working in a multi-disciplinary setting. Some of the time in the group is structured around presentations of psychotherapy evaluations. These evaluations are clinical interviews with clients who are interested in therapy, and the purpose of the evaluation is to determine whether the client is a good candidate for individual psychotherapy. Overall, students not only learn and practice case presentation skills but also share their understandings of clients and the workings of therapy with each other in a supportive and collegial environment.

CASE CONFERENCE
The purpose of this meeting is to help students jump right into conceptualizing clients from a psychodynamic perspective. During the first 2-3 months, we read and discuss Nancy McWilliams book, Psychoanalytic Case Formulation. It is recommended that participants pick up this book prior to the first meeting. For the following months, students will have the opportunity to present their work with clients and with the collaboration of the group, put together a case conceptualization.

Group Services Meetings

DBT CONSULTATION TEAM
We offer a wide range of groups from process groups to more structured groups such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which focuses on helping others manage affect, impulsivity, and interpersonal relationships. Since we all struggle with our work some times, the DBT Consultation Team is an opportunity to get feedback and support from peers and examine factors that interfere with the progress of treatment, using a DBT framework. Members of the treatment team share perspectives, consult on specific cases, and collaborate in treatment planning. Since some members of this team are new to DBT or may not be providing DBT treatment, time is also devoted to training in DBT. It helps clinicians to stay balanced in their approach by developing and examining skills and preventing “burn out” when working with difficult and often high risk clients.

GROUP SERVICES TEAM MEETING
Our team meeting is a forum for discussing clinical and administrative issues relating to work in group services. Agenda items include collaborative consultation, group updates, curriculum development, general announcements, planning, training topics, and team concerns.

MILIEU/COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
In addition to Trilogy providing comprehensive wrap-around services, it is a community. With that in mind, your training experience will provide you with the opportunity to participate as members of both the Psychological Services and Group Services teams and be a part of the agency in a larger sense. Participating in interdisciplinary staffing, all staff meeting, socializing in the milieu and planning and participating in holidays and special events are all a part of this experience. This will help you to become more familiar with clients and colleagues, understand how the agency functions, and collaborate with entire treatment teams in order to provide more effective treatment.

  • 1 Hour Case Conference (psychodynamic case formulation of therapy and diagnostic clients).
